Looking for VN Recommendations

A long day spent on working on the game, plus doing some artwork.

Heading for bed now.  Tomorrow I'll be catching up on emails and messages.

By the way, if you were to recommend one, and only one Japanese visual novel or dating sim to me, what would it be?  Caveat: it needs to have an English translation and I need to be able to find it easily for purchase.

It doesn't need to be a B/B, Bara, or Yaoi game, of course that's always preferred.  I just haven't actually played any Japanese VNs aside from the one that initially frustrated me and drove me to make this game.

I feel like I should at least play one that's awesome, as opposed to frustrating.

P.S., I have an extremely short attention span.  XD

  1. The only Japanese VN game that is in english that's yaoi and not super rape hardcore is Absolute Obedience. I enjoyed the game alot, lots of different boys to play around with. Yet it's best to go by the walkthrough on the game to get the best endings. Just saying. Hope you enjoy!

  2. I'm not sure if you're into console/portable gaming, but there is an otome game (VN/dating sim aimed at females) that has been translated into English called Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom. It's a bit slow paced, but it has a good story and some nice artwork.

Otome games are a different style than man love/bara/yaoi games (obviously), but it still gives a good indication of how Japanese visual novels work.

  3. Good yaoi games really are a pain to find in English, so unfortunately I don't think you'll have a huge amount of luck there :( But for het ones, assuming you want one that has an official English translation, is specifically a dating sim, and isn't too utterly BIZARRE... I would suggest Deardrops? It's more focused on the story than the dating aspect, but the story and characters are very good, and it's overall very fun to play. That website also has a trial of it you can get if you just want to play a little of it to see what it's like.

  4. Ever 17, if you can get your hands on it. If you have a DS, I also recommend 999. Both are written by the same guy, and both have really great, mind-bendy story-lines.

  5. Not exactly what you asked for but you could read someone playing through Dangan Ronpa which is sort of a deconstruction of a lot of VN cliches and is pretty funny. This is a full transcription/translation which might be helpful if you're looking to inspire yourself. It isn't really about dating at all, though.

    Here it is:

  6. Find the ones by Nitro+Chiral, they tend to be Plot-Heavy (admittedly, sometimes depressing).
Staying true to the themes of Yaoi though (for better or for worse), it ignores the realities of homosexual relationships (the angst, the conflicts, the acceptance and all that) and just treats them as something, well, serendipitous?

  7. I loved Katawa Shoujo and Silver Chaos.

    1. Is that in English? I played it in Japanese and really..ahem...enjoyed it, but would love a version I could understand

  9. Agree with the person above recommending Ever 17.. although I preferred Remember 11 (another game in the series), so that one!

Also, Swan Song... assuming you're okay with sad and messed up.

Okay, so that's two. They both have fan translation patches and neither are BL, but both are excellent.
